  • Mysterious Polio-like Illness Found In Five California Children

    By -

The Los Angeles Times reports that state public health officials have been investigating the illness since a doctor requested polio testing for a child with severe paralysis in 2012. Since then, similar cases have sporadically been reported throughout the state. Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to paralysis, breathing problems, or even death. The term poliomyelitis is from the Greek poliós meaning “grey”,myelós referencing the spinal cord, and -it is meaning inflammation.

According to a press release from the American Academy of Neurology dated February 23, 2014, an Abstract titled “A Polio-like Syndrome in California: Clinical, Radiologic, and Serologic Evaluation of Five Children Identified by a Statewide Laboratory over a Twelve-month Period” reveals that “All children presented with acute flaccid paralysis of one or more limbs that reached peak severity within 48 hours of onset. Furthermore, “All had been previously vaccinated against polio-virus.” That is a key concern – vaccinated against polio.

Interestingly, the title for that press release was “Mysterious Polio-like Illness Found in Five California Children.”

What the Abstract authors may not know is that 47,500 cases of vaccine-induced polio paralysis followed an oral polio vaccination campaign conducted by the GAVI Alliance, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the World Health Organization (WHO) in India in 2011.

Even though what’s happened to children in California may be considered mysterious or …

After years of controversy in the United States, the use of oral polio vaccine (OPV) was discontinued in 2000 due to its proven link with vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV), and in the UK circa 2004.

However, the oral polio vaccine continues to be distributed via ‘humanitarian campaigns’ to often-nutritionally-compromised children in developing countries. Why? Isn’t that tantamount to asking for trouble? Common sense dictates you should not inoculate or infect a child in less than optimum health or anyone who is nutritionally-compromised with an oral, live-attenuated vaccine, which can infect others in a community via unsanitary sewage conditions. The best approach to obliterating communicable diseases anywhere is to provide clean water, sanitation, sanitary living conditions, and nutritious foods.

    According to Gaia Health,

The National Polio Surveillance Project [India] data show that the polio eradication program has increased paralysis among children—from 3,047 cases yearly in 1997 to 61,038 cases in 2012, most now being classified as AFP [acute flaccid paralysis] instead of polio. The Government does not reveal how many of these cases are due to the vaccine. It was observed in 2005 that, against 66 cases of polio caused by the wild polio virus that year, 1,645 were caused by the vaccine. Data reveals that those vaccinated are 6.26 times more likely to be paralyzed.

Readers ought to take note that vaccine-induced-polio is now being reclassified as acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), presumably to skew oral polio vaccination campaigns favorably, rather than admitting vaccines cause the polio-like paralysis. Some researchers claim that there are other newly identified strains of enterovirus that could cause the paralysis. Nonetheless, there seems to be a coincidence occurring that these paralyses occur after oral polio vaccination campaigns.

Note the first sentence in the Gaia Health information above. Furthermore, why would governments refrain from disclosing how many cases resulted from the vaccine? The apparent answer lies in the fact that in 2005 only 66 cases of wild polio virus were contracted, whereas 1,645 cases were caused by the vaccine.

Here’s a suggestion: If California authorities or the folks at the American Academy of Neurology want to get a “heads up” on the “mysterious polio-like illness,” maybe that state’s health authorities and the AAN ought to investigate what’s been happening with vaccine-induced paralysis in developing countries.

According to radio news reports, an additional 25 children are suspected of coming down with a similar type affliction. The question that comes to mind is this: If those children are fully vaccinated against polio, which almost all kids in the USA are today, why the polio-like illness? Can it be that the polio vaccine that’s used in the USA is experiencing some sort of activity even though the U.S. polio vaccine is supposed to be an inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), and not the oral polio vaccine (OPV) used in developing countries.

According to the The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) website:

Each vaccine recommended for use against polio had its advantages and disadvantages. [There should be no disadvantages when vaccines are mandated, in my opinion. It’s not a crap shoot!] The advantage of OPV was that it was almost 100 percent effective at preventing polio. Also, because the vaccine virus was present in the stool, about 25 of 100 people who came in contact with someone who was immunized, would also become immune (this is called contact immunity). [Could that contact also include inducing polio symptoms, which apparently occurs in developing countries where OPVs are administered? “Contact immunity”?] [CJF emphasis added]

In the early 1960s, when immunization rates in this country were low, contact immunity was an important feature of OPV. However, despite OPV's 40 years of success, there was an extremely rare but frighteningly dangerous side effect: permanent paralysis. Paralysis caused by OPV occurred in about 1 of every 750,000 people after taking the first doses of the vaccine. [Not so! Look what happened in India and other countries.] Since 1979, the time when natural polio was eliminated from the United States, OPV caused about six to eight cases of paralysis each year.

It will be interesting to see how the spin on this most unfortunate turn of health events is played out in California, especially since it involves Big Pharma’s ‘sacred cow’—vaccines, which are supposed to prevent the very diseases for which they are administered. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if we don’t see more and more of this type of medical tragedy happening with and from more and more vaccines. They aren’t what they are cracked up to be, in my opinion.

Like many other infectious diseases, polio victims tend to be some of the most vulnerable members of the population. This includes the very young, pregnant women, and those with immune systems that are substantially weakened by other medical conditions. Anyone who has not been immunized against polio is especially susceptible to contracting the infection. Additional risk factors for polio include traveling to places where polio is endemic or widespread, living with someone infected with polio, working in a laboratory where live poliovirus is kept, and having your tonsils removed.
