  • Metamemory: Want to Remember Better?

    By -

Isn’t it just insane when at times there are very important things to be done that just weren’t done at the right time because it was…forgotten? Well, oftentimes I find myself on a “blanked out” mode, you know, kind of when I get into a room and I “lose my mind” on what I was supposed to do…and it happens to be pretty much irritating when my mind is clawing at “nothing.” As I get out of the room with some not-so-cute disorientation with that mental echo of “what was I supposed to be doing,” the memory comes back…after some precious minutes have passed. Worst is, time wasted.

If you are one of those people who constantly need reminders as you have the tendency to forget, perhaps you would need a strategy to keep your memory intact. Well, at least I do.

Should you be fond of sweets (and accumulating flabs), then there is a very big reason not to indulge in them and hit the gym instead. Michigan State University researchers tested 75 college students for two days and those who scored higher in retention are—drumroll please—those who were extremely fit!

Kimberly Fenn, co-author of the study and assistant professor in psychology said that “the findings show that lower-fit individuals lose more memory across time.” It doesn’t help to live such a sedentary lifestyle, and the study found online in the research journal Cognitive, Affective & Behavioral Neuroscience actually linked aerobic fitness to long-term memory!

This does tell me to keep in shape—flabs are just not healthy after all—physically and mentally. Which means…ooops! I am still sitting here…gotta run and start getting fit!
