GMO-FREE-CANADAAs of the moment, Canada hasn’t been active on the idea of labeling all genetically engineered foods in the country despite the people’s longest battle over 10 years of campaigning, over 80% of Canadians want to know how to differentiate organic from GMO products, this would only be possible if GMO labeling is strictly approved by the government, but Instead, a national standard for voluntary labeling was formed – this is good news, however this is only applicable for those establishments who want to volunteer, and so far, there is no company has yet labeled their products as containing GE elements.
There are 64 countries around the world implemented have a different types of measures and mandatory labeling GE food labeling laws including the 15 nations in the European Union, Australia, Japan, Brazil, China and Russia. In Canada, foods that are linked from biotechnology are commonly referred to as Genetically Modified (GM) or Genetically Engineered (GE) foods, these products are considered to be a new breed of human food. Health Canada are the one controlling the inflow and out flow of novel foods in the whole country through a pre-market notification requirement.

The Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) is calling on Health Canada to place a moratorium on approving new genetically modified (GM) foods, to re-evaluate the safety of GM foods already on the market, and to initiate a complete overhaul of the regulatory system.
The call comes in response to the republication of a long-term study of a GM corn that exposes a lack of scientific rigor in Canada’s regulatory system.
    CBAN’s Lucy Sharratt said:
Many Canadians may be surprised to find out that Health Canada doesn’t require any long-term safety tests on GM foods and that this study is the first of its kind.
The results of this study are a real concern, especially in Canada where we’ve been eating this GM corn since 2001.

The long-term safety test on GM corn was conducted by a team of scientists in France, …

The government should not deprive the people from knowing the information they need to know about the food that they are eating.
