  • Cholesterol Defends Itself

    The Center for Disease Control and Prevention lists heart disease as number one leading cause of death in America. An advice for its prevention in that ubiquitous warning includes staying low in cholesterol. As usual, high cholesterol is being accused for plaque formation, eventually leading to clogged arteries.

    This news of course has taken some joy out of our food consumption—we always watch our diet, watch over our backs while we try to eat what is “prohibited” in our diet—and feel guilty afterwards for indulging.

    Well, there is good news regarding this “issue.” Saturated fat-slash-cholesterol being the primary cause for heart diseases is now considered a myth. Consider this statement from the citizen petition filed by Dr. Fred Kummerow, who spent most of his life on heart disease and its corresponding cause and prevention, to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 for a ban on synthetic trans fats:

    “Trans fat leads to the reduction of prostacyclin that is needed to prevent blood clots in the arteries. A blood clot in any of the coronary arteries can result in sudden death.”

    Well, there is good news regarding this “issue.” Saturated fat-slash-cholesterol being the primary cause for heart diseases is now considered a myth.     Trans fat consumption had long been associated by Dr. Kummerow to death due to heart diseases. In other words, saturated fat aka cholesterol is not to be blamed.

    And now, cholesterol has spoken and has defended itself. So you can go ahead and eat that egg now.
